If you wish to travel on from Budapest by train …Keleti Station has trains to Munich, Bratislava,Dresden, Berlin,Hamburg, Bucharest, Prague, Vienna, Eger, Pecs, Gyór etc
..details HERE and on the Hungarian Train Website HERE
Trains to Vienna from Budapest take about 2.5 hours and although it is possible to go for a day trip such a short time will not allow you to see the vast amount of museums and palaces etc that Vienna has to offer.
If you want to take a trip to the Lake Balaton you can take a train from Déli Pályaudvar (Buda) which is at the end of the metro line M2 … take it from Blaha Lujza Ter. There are also trains to Balaton from Keleti Station, which is down the road from the apartment. These trains, however, are less frequent …check the timetable
